How to Write a Book ProposalĪ book proposal has a title page (also called a cover page), a table of contents for the proposal, and several sections: about the book (the content, the market, and the author), about the promotion, and a sample chapter. Note: Different rules apply to writing a book proposal for fiction books, so make sure to do more research if you’re writing a book proposal for a fiction book. Let’s dig into what should be in a proposal for a non-fiction book. That means they’ll take you more seriously, and your chances for getting a deal will be much, much higher. A good book proposal proves to everyone in the industry that you know what you’re doing and take yourself seriously. It shows you and others who the book is for, how it will help them, how it differs from other books, and how you will market your book so that you and your publisher will make money. The book proposal is your marketing plan.A proposal keeps you right on track because it contains the theme, table of contents, chapter-by-chapter synopsis, as well as a sample chapter. Not only is a proposal the first step in gaining the positive attention of an agent or acquisition editor, but a book proposal also helps you in many other ways: The proposal is the key to making your book really come to life for your publishing partners. The main purpose of the book proposal is to convince literary agents and publishers that there is a market for your book and that you are the best person to write the book-and help them sell it. Note: You can download our free book proposal template and book proposal sample to see exactly how all this will look on the page. That’s why you have to write a book proposal, even if you’ve been asked to also include the complete manuscript. They can’t answer that question just by reading the book they have to understand who the author is, what their goals are, and what their marketing plans are. That’s what matters, and so that’s the information publishing gatekeepers need to do their jobs well. The #1 thing literary agents, acquisitions editors, and publishers must know before deciding whether or not to publish a nonfiction book is: “Will tens of thousands of readers buy this?” They want to see a proposal that sells your book idea and gets them excited to work with you. They don’t have time to read a complete book. When authors ask me, “How can I write a book proposal?” or, “Do I need a proposal if I write a how-to book?” I often say, “You only need a book proposal if you want to get your book published.”Īgents and editors don’t want to see a completed nonfiction book most of the time. The adjective “Kafkaesque” has become commonly used to denote the mundane yet absurd and surreal. His unique body of writing-in the Prague German dialect spoken by the German Jewish minority in the Bohemian capital-much of it incomplete and published posthumously despite his wish that it be destroyed, is considered highly influential in Western literature. In his final novel, The Castle, which ends incomplete in mid-sentence, many psychotic features are also in evidence.īorn in Prague, Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was one of the greatest German language novelists and short story writers of the 20th century. His days are ended when two strangers forcibly take him from his residence (possible passivity phenomenon in the form of made actions) and, after failing to make him commit suicide, drive a knife into his heart. The Trial's main character, K, is paranoid and persecuted in a complex dictatorial bureaucracy, where he is being convicted for no apparent reason. Kafka's two main novels, The Trial and The Castle, are also rich in connotations with relevance to modern psychiatry. Aubrey Lewis, former chairman of psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, is known to have advised his students to read Kafka's books, saying that the best way to study psychiatry is to observe such patterns of thoughts and behaviour. A medical classic should not necessarily be a book written specifically about medicine. Works of fiction with aspects that are relevant to medicine, including writers' own experiences of illness, are a rich resource for doctors. As a climax to this terribly poignant and heart wrenching tale, the bug, having lost much weight, loses the battle with life, and the body is discreetly and unceremoniously disposed of. With the end approaching the bug attempts one final rapprochement with his family and then crawls out after hearing his sister playing the violin, desperate for love and affection. We can observe his family's social decline, burdened by shame and the expense of looking after their metamorphosed son they eventually give up, bitter, tired, and angry. Modern connotations of Gregor's “mental illness” include being in seclusion, stigma, and disability, and his father physically assaults the creature he perceives as dangerous. More subtle changes, such as sleep reversal and changes in taste (the bug eats only rotten food), and anorexia are also in evidence. Psychosis has been associated with loss of personal identity-hence a bug-and a variety of hallucinations, visual, somatic, and auditory, can be teased out from Kafka's descriptions. With disordered speech, perplexed and lost in time, but paradoxically calm and initially insightless in a nightmarish yet serene universe, the “bug” struggles on. He barricades himself in his bedroom to avoid family, and his voice changes to “animal-like”-monosyllabic and unintelligible. Its predicament could be interpreted as psychotic: dreamlike and detached from reality. Kafka describes, in colourful, evocative detail, how this initially bed bound and haplessly transformed creature tries to survive. “When Gregor Samsa awoke from troubled dreams one morning, he found that he had been transformed in his bed into an enormous bug” is Franz Kafka's superbly mesmerising opening to his novella The Metamorphosis. Even saturated fat counteracted the harmful effects of the alcohol on microbes.Īlthough the jury is still out on whether drinking small amounts regularly is beneficial, overdoing alcohol is obviously bad for you. Similar preventive effects were seen on mice given probiotics containing beneficial microbes such as lactobacillus, found in cheese and yoghurt. The high-fibre-fed mice amazingly had virtually no obvious side-effects from the alcohol on their livers. Going back to their normal binge-drinking mice, the scientists tried feeding them a high-fibre diet (enriched with pectin found in apples) as well as alcohol shots, and compared this to a low-fibre diet. When the researchers repeated the experiment in mice lacking microbes, they found no evidence of liver damage. If our microbes are part of the problem – what happens if we eliminate them? Experiments making mice binge-drink like humans produced signs of liver damage – again because of the toxins, leaky gut and inflammation. Studies have also shown that when mice are fed these toxins, they seek out more alcohol than normal mice, suggesting that the microbes, via their toxins, could actually be encouraging us to seek out even more alcohol and – worryingly – even lead to addiction. So, drinking too much alcohol actually causes toxins to be released from our microbes, as well as growing more alcohol-loving microbe species. So, as she was drinking her beer and feeling increasingly tired and lethargic, her alcohol-loving microbe species were busy reproducing. When she looked at its possible function from its genes, she found it could produce alcohol dehydrogenase – the enzyme that breaks down alcohol to acetaldehyde. Her 5,000 or so gut microbes overall did not change, but a few species increased markedly – one relatively unknown one called Erysipelotrichia increased five-fold. One of my own researchers (I’m a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London) diligently experimented on her own microbes by drinking three pints of beer each evening for five days. Population studies, such as the American gut project, show that low to moderate alcohol intake can actually increase your microbial diversity, which is usually beneficial for your health. Within their guts the alcohol produced a brief, but large increase in the microbe species that were pro-inflammatory, stimulating the immune system as if it were under attack and contributing to the general sick-feeling so typical of hangovers. These toxins (called LPS) had somehow leaked out of their intestines, as a result of the inflammation the alcohol had produced. There was a wide variety in response: those with the worst symptoms and changes in blood tests had the highest levels of toxins coming from the cell walls of their gut microbes. Twenty-five healthy volunteers who were not regular drinkers were given a wine glass of vodka. Last year, a US study explored for the first time what binge drinking did to our microbes. So clearly the genes that control these enzymes are important – but they are not the whole story. Other twins studies have shown that liking or disliking the taste of alcohol, the amount of drinking, and alcohol addiction are strongly heritable traits. There are also more subtle gene variants that alter how much acetaldehyde an individual can produce and how fast they can eliminate it.Ī study of more than 4,000 twins in Australia has shown that susceptibility to hangovers has a major genetic component. This means that, compared with Caucasians, they suffer more side-effects from boozing, such as flushing and nausea. Many east Asian people carry a mutation in a gene that increases the speed at which acetaldehyde is formed. I think the death here is more metaphorical. Well, the man is implied to die at the end, and he has cuts on his legs where his 'radish sprouts' were (which supports the whole reality/dream interwoven narratives). between that and the songs at the end about children hunting down kidnappers, there's a general tone of 'adults manipulating children'. The stuff at the end with the girl and the train station and the 'circus' not coming also felt like something in favor of the pedophile interpretation, the girl lamenting about the 'circus not coming'. My guess on the children's choir is probably related to his tendencies, being attracted to events in which children are being publicly consumed (e.g. The stuff he sees in the dream world are usually related to fixations or things in his life - the Daikoku book and his father, the department store, an encounter with Americans obsessed with "population control". Maybe he feels guilty or maybe he's sincerely just pathetic enough to still long for this girl (I'm vouching for the latter because the protagonist doesn't demonstrate any self awareness about his views towards young girls), but in any case, his nurse reminds him of the girl, and he sees the girl multiple times during his dream-trip to a hot springs in 'hell'. But I get the sense that the protagonist is probably a pedophile of some sort, who manipulated (but not to the point of any touching) a girl. I don't really know what gets the protagonist into the hospital in the first place (One could say that maybe the sequence mentioning the kangaroo notebook is a hallucination or recollection of the protagonist's job). In this case, a dream-like world formed from the protagonists memories, entered and explored via a near-death state. I think that there's a throughline with previous Abe books in that this book is about the disorientation/dissolution of identity of a protagonist, but in this case, the space in which the protagonist undergoes that (e.g., the dunes in Woman in the Dunes, the hospital in Secret Rendezvous, the city in Ruined Map, mines in Ark Sakura) - is not a physical space, but a mental one. You can see other reviews for plot summaries, but to me the gist is that this book weaves between two worlds - the fugue/hallucination/dream state of the protagonist, and less frequently, a sick ward at a hospital. The man says the 1920s were "way before I was born", and his parents died around 5 years, ago, so my guess is the protagonist is nearing retirement age (since the book is set at least past 1987 according to the Pink Floyd references). The novel follows a man (curiously I think the fact it's a man is only confirmed by the implied death article at the end of the book). In the same way that a Japanese reader pointed out that Abe's sex hospital catastrophe novel "Secret Rendezvous" sounds like Yosuke Yamashita Trio's "Arashi" (1977), I think much of Kangaroo Notebook is meant to have the score of "It's a Small World (but worse)", outside of the Pink Floyd references. I imagine instrumentation would be something like the grating hellscape of the "It's a Small World!" ride at Disneyworld. The first 6 notes on each line are staccato, the last note is held for the quarter note. It goes:Ĥ/4, C Major, one note per syllable. While reading this book I wrote a jingle to go along with the "help me! club"'s jingle. "Help me help me help me please, please please won't you help me please." A group of child-demons, part of the Help Me! Club, sings this a bunch over the novel.
